What are Author Swaps?
Author Swaps on Ream is a powerful tool designed to facilitate group cross-promotions, helping authors collaborate to increase visibility and reach new readers. These swaps are where authors join forces to share each other’s work. For instance, if you're a fairy tale romance author who wants to organize a promotional event on National FairyTale Day, you can use the Author Swaps tool to connect with other Ream authors in your genre and collectively promote your pages, reaching more readers than you could alone.
What Are the Benefits of Cross-Promotions?
Cross-promotions bring immense value to authors by allowing them to tap into each other’s audiences, thereby expanding their reach within their genre. When one author shares your book, it can gain new exposure—but when multiple authors share it, the potential for new readers skyrockets. Additionally, cross-promos foster strong networking opportunities with other authors, creating a community where authors help boost each other’s visibility. This can also build trust with readers; if they enjoy your work, they’re likely to appreciate recommendations from you, especially when it comes to other authors who share similar themes or genres.
How Do I Organize a Swap?
Organizing a swap on Ream is simple:
-
Choose a Theme: First, decide on a theme for your swap. Whether it's seasonal, genre-based, or centered around a specific trope, your theme helps attract relevant authors and makes the promotion feel cohesive. If you’re looking for ideas, we have a list of suggested themes to spark inspiration.
-
Submit Your Swap: Fill out the form here to officially register your swap. Once submitted, your swap will appear in the swap directory, and authors subscribed to notifications in that genre will receive a notification of your swap.
-
Invite Fellow Authors: Reach out to author friends who may be interested in participating. Once they join the promo, you’ll receive an email with their contact information, making it easy to communicate with them.
-
Connect with Participants: After the submission deadline, follow up by emailing participating authors with details of the swap, including the scheduled promotion dates and any relevant guidelines.
What Should Authors Do Once They Set Up a Swap?
Once your swap is set up and authors have joined, it’s time to coordinate! Here’s how:
-
Provide Guidance: Share a structured plan with participants, outlining how the swap will work, including promotion dates and any key points they should mention.
-
Set Up Swap Materials: Decide how each book will be presented. For most swaps, a blurb or one to two sentences along with a cover image and link are ideal, as they’re easy to share and grab readers’ attention quickly.
-
Encourage Cohesive Promotion: Aim for consistency. Ask participating authors to use similar messaging in their posts, which can make the swap look organized and more engaging to readers.
-
Send Proof of Participation: Once each author completes their part in the promotion, they can submit screenshots or links to their promotional posts. This way, everyone can ensure full participation and track the success of the swap.
What Should Authors Do Once They Join a Swap?
As a participant in a swap, here’s how to make the most of it:
-
Get Familiar with the Theme: Familiarize yourself with the theme and the books in the swap. Understanding the swap's context helps you communicate with readers more authentically.
-
Plan Your Promotions: Schedule your posts or emails according to the swap’s timeline. Make sure to post within the designated period and tag the swap or other authors if applicable.
-
Highlight the Appeal: Share why you’re promoting these books; a personal endorsement goes a long way. Readers appreciate when authors they trust recommend other books with enthusiasm.
Are There Subscriber Requirements for Swaps?
For some swaps, there may be a minimum newsletter subscriber requirement to ensure each participant can bring meaningful visibility. This requirement will be listed in the swap details if applicable.
Communication Tips for Swap Organizers
As the swap organizer, clear and open communication is essential. Here’s how to manage this role effectively:
-
Regular Updates: Keep authors informed by sending updates about swap progress, upcoming deadlines, and any changes to the plan.
-
Provide Assets: Create easy-to-share assets like graphics, promo copy, and suggested hashtags. This makes it simple for participants to share consistently and attractively.
-
Encourage Feedback: After the swap, gather feedback from participants to improve future swaps. This not only strengthens your network but helps refine the cross-promo process.
